Broader forest protection understanding urged

26/01/2011
The International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) has called on the UN to broaden its forest protection efforts beyond its focus on using them to fight climate change.

IUFRO has said that not considering the effects forests have on sectors including energy and agriculture will hinder any further goals aimed at conservation and slowing climate change.

IUFRO's current chairman, academic Jeremy Rayner, said that it was crucial to look at global demands for forest land, for example, the use of palm oil grown on deforested Indonesian land in an internationally recognised brand of biscuits.
